Divided and Conquered: Why Solo Leaves You Susceptible

Divide and Conquer! Every military tactician understands the danger of isolation in battle. Since the days of Prussian General Carl von Clausewitz and Field Marshal Moltke the Elder, modern armies have followed the principle that a unified force is harder to defeat. More warriors make the unit stronger and more resilient.
Brilliant military leaders not only understand the value of having highly trained, exceptionally talented warriors on the battlefield—they also recognize that a superior soldier is always harder to defeat than a substandard one. Moreover, they understand that even average warriors become much more difficult to defeat when they stand united in combat.
Moltke and Clausewitz demonstrated the value of "mass" when engaging the enemy. The military doctrine of mass emphasizes the disproportionate advantage of superior numbers in the midst of battle. Despite today's highly advanced technology in warfare, the principle of mass continues to prevail.
These brilliant theorists recognized that there is a critical point in almost every battle that will likely determine the outcome of the war. Moreover, they understood that a pivotal moment in battle is often decided by having the right number of troops in the right place at the right time.
As a warrior who has studied battles all my life, I’ve personally witnessed the impact that a dense concentration of highly motivated warriors can have against a vastly larger enemy force scattered across the battlespace.
I’ve also had the privilege of studying theology at the highest levels of academia and society. The principle of mass applies to your individual faith just as much as it does to nations waging war against one another. I’ve written this article to show you that the tactic of divide and conquer is just as dangerous in your personal battles as it is on the battlefield.
Here are five compelling reasons to resist the urge to isolate yourself during times of hardship:

Here are five compelling reasons to resist the urge to isolate yourself during times of hardship:
1. Increased Stress and Anxiety
Fear is your worst enemy. When you face difficulties alone, your mind can become a breeding ground for stress and anxiety. Without the buffer of support, negative thoughts can quickly spiral out of control. But sharing your struggles with others can lighten your load—they can help you fight against your greatest enemy: fear.
2. Lack of Support
Isolation creates a wall between you and the people who care about you. Friends, family, and community are invaluable during tough times—they offer comfort, encouragement, and a reminder that you're never truly alone. Reach out! You might be surprised by how many people are ready to stand by your side when the bullets start to fly.
3. Diminished Resilience
Every challenge presents an opportunity for growth. Why would anyone in their right mind miss the chance to grow stronger through hardship? When you isolate yourself, you risk missing out on some of the most valuable lessons that come from difficult experiences. Together, we can learn, grow, and face obstacles with strength and unity.
4. Your flanks are Exposed
Two are harder to kill than one. When a force can’t be defeated head-on, the only path to victory is often through a flank or rear attack. The enemy of your soul knows this is just as true in the spiritual realm. That’s why you need someone watching your six. The Bible warns, “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). He’s looking for someone who is alone and isolated. Without a team of friends standing guard with you, your flanks are wide open.
5. Stagnation and Lack of Growth
Hardships can be powerful catalysts for personal growth. However, isolation can stifle that growth. Embrace the wisdom and creativity that come through collaboration. Surrounding yourself with supportive individuals can spark new ideas and help you navigate challenges with renewed vigor.
Never ignore the dangers of divide and conquer. In the face of hardship, remember that you can choose connection over isolation. Lean on your friends, share your journey, and allow others to stand with you. When we come together, we don’t just face our battles—we conquer them. So, reach out, embrace the support around you, and let others strengthen you. Together, you can rise above it.
