Are you really destined for greatness or failure?

Are You Destined for Greatness or Failure? (Spoiler: Neither)
Let’s get something straight right now: anyone who says you’re destined for failure (or greatness) probably also checks their horoscope, wears socks with sandals, and believes that tomatoes are a fruit. But hey, these whackos make life interesting!
I’m not sure when or how this stupid statement started. Now, it sounds poetic to say you’re on a path written in the stars, but if the universe was really showing your path, how do you know that you’re not following my stars or I’m not following your stars? Is there a cosmic prophecy about me always getting stuck in the slow lane at the grocery store?
In this article, I aim to tackle the notion that you are born with an unchangeable destiny. While I’m totally convinced that the God of the universe has a plan for this world and all the people on it, I don’t buy the false notion that you were born to failure or greatness.

Fate versus faith
Think of it: if your fate is pre-written, why bother setting your alarm clock? Just sleep until destiny drags you out of bed! Tell your boss, “It’s not my fault I’m late; fate wouldn’t let me leave my blanket burrito until 10:43 AM.” And then, let me know how that works for you.
My faith is in a God big enough to hold the fate of all people in the palm of His hands, but He still expects me to set my alarm in order to get up on time in the morning.
If your parents and grandparents were extremely successful, there’s no guarantee that you will be also. I hope you learn from the generations that came before you, but that doesn’t mean you are destined to live out their fate.

Fate and failure
And what about failure? If missing the recycling truck every Monday is my tragic destiny, then where’s the dramatic background music? Where’s my motivational montage as I chase the garbage truck in my pajamas? I recommend you set your alarm next week if the truck comes by your house before fate wakes you up that week.
Here’s the truth (brace yourself): destiny is often used as an excuse. Most of us are just muddling along, hoping our coffee doesn’t spill and that no one notices our mismatched socks. Greatness and failure are both overrated—and anyway, most of life happens somewhere delightfully in between.

Fate and your future
I not only believe, but am totally convinced, that God has a calling for every person on Earth. That fact means we can no longer blame fate for our life circumstances. If your family dynamics were a disaster, you don’t have to follow in those footsteps.
So next time someone tells you you’re destined for something, challenge them: “Is there a refund policy? A full exchange program? Can I swap destinies with Elon Musk for a week?”
Never trust the stars. You’re not destined for success or failure based on your family history. You’re just delightfully unpredictable.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, destiny is calling. Or maybe it’s just another spam call trying to sell me an extended warranty. Either way, I’m not answering.
